Gargoyles Contrary to some belief, Gargoyles are not evil. They were, in fact, created by the Christians as a tool to entice heathens and pagans into the church to learn about God. The uglier the creature, the more effective it was. Said to be so ugly they would scare away all evil spirits, non-Christians would not fear the wrath of their gods should they enter the churches. Originally carved as water spouts and placed on churches to allow water to flow from roof tops and as a defense to spill out hot oil on enemies below. The non-water spouts are called grotesques, but have been included as gargoyles by the general populace. Modern day use includes placing one in a child's room to "scare away" the boogie man.
